REVERSING THE "TAKE, USE, DISPOSE" PARADIGM: THE ECO-DESIGN CHOICES BEHING OUR PACKAGING

The story of a shampoo bottle starts long before it reaches the shower. This is why at Davines we study the most low-impact packaging solutions for all our products.

From research to production

At Davines Village, ourPackaging Research and Development department studies the most low-impact packaging solutions for all our products, following the principles of eco-design.

Only when we are satisfied with the results of our research - on environmental impact, material innovation and large-scale application - can we move on to production, without compromising on quality and safety.

Our suppliers also respect our values. For example, Punto Pack - a local manufacturer in the Parma region - produces post-consumer recycled plastic packaging. And following our example, it has also become B Corp. Thanks to our Advocacy activities, 25 of our suppliers from our Parma headquarters, salons and international distributors have obtained B Corp certification.

Eco-design principles

How many of you have ever heard of eco-design? In Davines, eco-design became the guiding light of circular packaging development. Let’s explore together our main principles.

  • Use less material, designing lighter packaging while maintaining its safety and functionality features;
  • Simplify product design, reducing unnecessary components;
  • Prefer recycled or renewably sourced materials, phasing out the use of virgin materials;
  • Facilitate recycling, for example, by preferring single-material solutions;
  • Favor refillable solutions;
  • Optimize space for logistical distribution, so the number of products transported and the resulting CO2 emissions can be made more efficient.

Lighter packaging also on the environment

Our first principle of eco-design is to use less materialby designing lighter and thinner packaging. Lighter packaging means less material used, hence less consumption of our planet's resources. A lighter packaging not only consumes less material, but it also translates into lower CO2eq emissions.

Recycled or renewable sourced materials

Our second principle of eco-design is to usecircular, recycled or coming from renewable sources materials. Thus, the recycled plastic we use for our packaging is mainly from PET bottles.

Compared to 2015 - when 100 per cent of plastic packaging was made of virgin material from fossil fuels - in 2023, recycled, biobased or mass-balanced plastic packaging will be 55.7 per cent.

But our commitment for 2030 is to revise the entire logic of the packaging system to 10% of virgin fossil plastic purchased and using only 100% recycled aluminium, paper and cardboard.

Reuse of empty packaging

One of the most interesting - and unique - aspects of Davines packaging is that it can bereused for other purposes and have a second life,even before recycling. For example, Essential Haircare or Naturaltech conditioner packaging can becomebeautiful plant pots or containers for small household items.

Thanks to their minimalist and iconic design, these reused pots can be the stars of any salon, office or home. So before you recycle Davines products, experiment with creative reusable solutions: thank you for your contribution to circularity!

Packaging recyclability

Speaking of circular packaging, recyclability is an essential aspect. We are proud to say that our plastic packaging material is recyclable and dreams of a new life! For example, recycled PET can be turned into textile fibres to make beach towels, parasols, backpacks, children's toys and much more.

Two key points: use the product to the last drop and check your municipality's instructions on how to separate waste. Because a small gesture of care contributes to the creation of a true circular economic model.

Impact beyond our value chain

These are our efforts - starting with eco-design - to minimise the impact of our packaging. But we are also committed to looking beyond our design process, production facilities and practices to facilitate recycling.

In fact, since 2021 we have partnered with Plastic Bank to incentivize the collection of plastic waste from the environment and recycle it as a raw material, protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems and coastal communities in Indonesia, the Philippines, Brazil and Thailand.

From 2022, for every plastic packaged product we sell, an equivalent amount of plastic is collected and removed from the environment.

Reducing and balancing carbon emissions

There is no beauty in a business that does not respect the planet. That’s why our packaging choices have at their core eco-design principles, that allow us to minimize our impact on the environment.

But we are aware that this is a journey. Every human activity, even those carried out with the utmost care, has an impact on the planet. And no matter how hard we try, we are still not able to cut all the emissions related to our packaging: but we can still be responsible for all those that remain.

For this reason, we also try to take care of the emissions we cannot yet reduce by neutralising part them. We do this by investing in reforestation projects, certified Plan Vivo, with organisations that are regenerating important ecosystems.
